The emphasis on social insects like ants and termites forces us to reconsider what we understand by “society,” “intelligence,” and “organization.” Instead of glorifying the individual, I highlight forms of life in which anonymous and cooperative coordination is central. These forms are not designed, but emergent, and are sustained by a kind of biological imperative that challenges the notion of freedom.
